Pa’l maize is some thing that I understood until later in life.
I came to the realization that maize is essential to life. What I mean is that the maize powers the vehicles we drive to the tacos stands that I love.
I remember working with some guys from Michoacán, Jalisco, and other state in Mexico. They would say at times when the work was hard and painful from the look on their faces.
Uno: Por que le chingas tan duro?
Otro: Pues, como que por que? Pa’l maize.
Translation:
One: Why you work so hard?
Other: What do you mean why? For the corn.
Corn is what we eat and we spend our time and energy to get a bite.
